Seeing Jesus in the Book of Genesis

This last week The Gospel Coalition posted an interview with T. Desmond Alexander on the challenge of preaching Christ from the book of Genesis. In conjunction with this interview they also posted another page loaded with resources to help in that endeavor. These sources are more than for just preaching, they are a great help to anyone wanting to see how Genesis is filled with passages about Jesus. One of the first things I resonated with that Alexander said in relation to “finding” Jesus in Genesis was;

The problem is not that Christ is hidden beneath lots of other things. Rather, it’s recognizing how Genesis points forward to him, anticipating his coming and revealing his importance.

In my opinion Alexander is spot on! Far too many people are digging for a hidden meaning in the Text when in fact the Text is simply pointing the reader or propagating the reader to Christ.

I would encourage you to read the entire article. Alexander, in my opinion, is one of the finer Old Testament scholars out there. I have enjoyed reading his work immensely and look forward to the updated version of From Paradise to the Promised Land coming out this summer.

A Sermon without Christ…

As I sit in my office wrapping up my preparation to preach tomorrow I came across this gem:

The motto of all true servants of God must be, ‘We preach Christ; and Him crucified.’ A sermon without Christ in it is like a loaf of bread without any flour in it. No Christ in your sermon, sir? Then go home, and never preach again until you have something worth preaching.

Those are the words of Charles Haddon Spurgeon from 1876. What a reminder of the stewardship of the gospel that we must proclaim.
