Revive & Plant | A Church Planting Conference

Some of my friends in the Virginia Beach/Chesapeake area are organizing and hosting a church planting conference this March which looks to be a great gathering to promote church planting and church revitalization. I know a couple of the speakers well and have greatly benefited from them in my life.

Who is speaking?

Scott Osborne, one of the organizers, will be speaking in a couple of sessions. Scott is the pastor of Redemption Church in Chesapeake, VA. Scott and his wife were my campus parents while I was a freshman in college. Years later I had the privilege of being in seminary with Scott. The man loves the gospel and wants to show it through church planting.

Ian McConnell was my pastor in Philadelphia at Grace Bible Church. Spend 5 minutes around this guy and you’ll see he is serious about the gospel and church planting…and Philadelphia sports! I cannot speak highly enough of Ian. When I left Grace Bible Church a couple of years ago to come to Northland the hardest part was knowing that Ian would no longer be caring for my soul as my shepherd.

The third speaker is Tyler Jones, who is one of the movers and shakers in Acts29 (church planting organization) in the southwest area of the US. He and his family are pastoring in the Raleigh area of North Carolina.

When & where should I show up?

The conference is March 22 and 23rd in Chesapeake, VA. The schedule and registration information can be found on the Revive & Plant website.

If you want to connect with them you can find them on Twitter and on Facebook.

iPhone vs. Samsung Galaxy S II

Perhaps that title should be iOS vs. Android…

As some of you know about a week ago I switched from using an iPhone to a Samsung Galaxy S II. To many of you, including my wife, I have been labeled a traitor and have somehow made Steve Jobs rollover in his grave.

Let me break it down for you. I’ve been using the Samsung Galaxy for about a week now. I love the larger screen, the brighter screen, and the lightness of the phone. I love that I can expand the storage of it with MicroSD cards (32GB for $30). The iPhone is heavier with a smaller screen and is thicker. With the iPhone there is no expansion available.

A few things I’ve learned is that iOS borrowed the notification feature from Android in iOS5. I love how on the Galaxy there is a social media hub that pulls in email and phone numbers for any of your friends in Facebook to your contacts. With this feature I went from 280 contacts to about 900. It also pulls their profile pics in as well.

What Android doesn’t do well is Exchange integration. Sure, I can pull up my email, contacts, and calendars but when I am in the email app I cannot search LDAP for addresses. I also cannot access a global address book on our Exchange server without a 3rd party app, which doesn’t even integrate with anything else. The other negative from the Galaxy is a seemly weaker Wi-Fi and cell signal. I can’t prove it, but it seems like it is a bit weaker.

All done and said I am going back to the iPhone. I am too married to the functions with the Exchange serve to not go back. So haters stop hating, I’m back on Steve’s side.

My New CrossBreed Holster

Not too long ago I picked up a new Glock 17 (9mm). With the anticipation of Wisconsin’s new conceal carry law going into effect I thought I would get a holster for it. A friend of mine I used to work with recommended CrossBreed Holsters as the most concealable and comfortable holster for a full size gun. I got mine in the mail a week or so ago and have been wearing it around the house to break it in. I’ve also been wearing it without the gun here and there breaking the leather in.

My first impressions with the holster have been great! It is very comfortable to wear and doesn’t print at all against my clothing. The one I got is called the “SuperTuck Deluxe” and I opted for the horse leather option (for better breath-ability).

Mark Craighead is the guy behind CrossBreed Holsters. He takes quality and customer service seriously. In fact, his holsters come with a lifetime warranty as long as you treat the holster well. So if you are looking for quality holster then check out CrossBreed Holsters; you won’t be disappointed.

Help Me Name My Blog/Website!

The the last seven months or so I have simply used my name as the name of the blog…I’m thinking it is time to change it up. I’m thinking that with an actual name it will be easier to communicate what I am all about. So this is where you, the reader, come in. I am perhaps one of the least creative guys I know so I need help. What’s in it for you? I’m glad you asked!

If someone suggests a name that I take I will reward them with a $25 Westminister Bookstore gift certificate. Here are the ground rules:

  1. It can be either in English or mean something awesome in Latin.
  2. It should be something that helps communicate what my blog is all about…informing and equipping the church.
  3. It should not be the name of another website and ideally the domain will be available (you can check availability at checkddomain.com)
  4. To make a suggestion simply leave a comment below.
  5. I’ll leave this open for a week or so and hopefully get an awesome name by then!

If I get a few awesome names I might put it to a vote!

That is the power of the cross!

Off to the Gospel Coalition

This afternoon I set my eye on the windy city for this years Gospel Coalition Conference. I have never been to this conference, only its sister conference Together for the Gospel. I am looking forward to seeing some old friends and making some new ones. If you are going to be down there for the conference and want to meet up just leave a comment below.

With me being out for the week I am not sure what will happen at the blog. I am going to try to send out daily updates, but who knows how that will go. If I don’t, I’ll be back with a recap at the end of the week.
