Book Review | “Real Marriage” by Mark & Grace Driscoll

I received the Driscoll’s newest book, Real Marriage: The Truth About Sex, Friendship, & Life Together, a week or so before it released (January 2012). I glanced through it as I do any other book and knew immediately that there would be controversy contained within. When an author includes the statement in the preface; “Don’t read as a critic trying to find where we might be wrong” then controversy certainly will ensue (xi). Because of this I decided I would not write my review right away because I knew the blog-o-sphere would be swamped with peoples reactions to the book—both good and bad. So now that much of the storm has passed it is time to tell you what I think. Continue Reading →

Seeing Jesus in the Book of Genesis

This last week The Gospel Coalition posted an interview with T. Desmond Alexander on the challenge of preaching Christ from the book of Genesis. In conjunction with this interview they also posted another page loaded with resources to help in that endeavor. These sources are more than for just preaching, they are a great help to anyone wanting to see how Genesis is filled with passages about Jesus. One of the first things I resonated with that Alexander said in relation to “finding” Jesus in Genesis was;

The problem is not that Christ is hidden beneath lots of other things. Rather, it’s recognizing how Genesis points forward to him, anticipating his coming and revealing his importance.

In my opinion Alexander is spot on! Far too many people are digging for a hidden meaning in the Text when in fact the Text is simply pointing the reader or propagating the reader to Christ.

I would encourage you to read the entire article. Alexander, in my opinion, is one of the finer Old Testament scholars out there. I have enjoyed reading his work immensely and look forward to the updated version of From Paradise to the Promised Land coming out this summer.

Parking Lot #10 | From Phil Trach

My friend and colleague Phil Trach took a little spring break vacation to Appleton, WI and found this gem for me. The fella in the Ford Escape better of had a can opener to get back into his car.

My Newest Website

Earlier this week my newest website went live. I should probably refrain from saying “my” since this was a huge project with many people working on it. I managed the project and had a lot of help along the way. This website is for Northland Graduate School, where I am the assistant director.

This site incorporated a lot of things that I hadn’t spent much time with previously. Continue Reading →

Another Shout-out for My Church Planting Friends

I posted this a bit ago but wanted to give one last shout to those that might have forgotten. Revive & Plant is coming up in just a few days…if you are close to Hampton Roads you should probably be at this conference!

Some of my friends in the Virginia Beach/Chesapeake area are organizing and hosting a church planting conference this March which looks to be a great gathering to promote church planting and church revitalization. I know a couple of the speakers well and have greatly benefited from them in my life.

Who is speaking?

Scott Osborne, one of the organizers, will be speaking in a couple of sessions. Scott is the pastor of Redemption Church in Chesapeake, VA. Scott and his wife were my campus parents while I was a freshman in college. Years later I had the privilege of being in seminary with Scott. The man loves the gospel and wants to show it through church planting.

Ian McConnell was my pastor in Philadelphia at Grace Bible Church. Spend 5 minutes around this guy and you’ll see he is serious about the gospel and church planting…and Philadelphia sports! I cannot speak highly enough of Ian. When I left Grace Bible Church a couple of years ago to come to Northland the hardest part was knowing that Ian would no longer be caring for my soul as my shepherd.

The third speaker is Tyler Jones, who is one of the movers and shakers in Acts29 (church planting organization) in the southwest area of the US. He and his family are pastoring in the Raleigh area of North Carolina.

When & where should I show up?

The conference is March 22 and 23rd in Chesapeake, VA. The schedule and registration information can be found on the Revive & Plant website.

If you want to connect with them you can find them on Twitter and on Facebook.

March Madness Bracket of Integrity

This came up last year…is it legit to use pragmatism to enter multiple brackets into a March Madness contest? I’m a firm believer in integrity and that makes me a one bracket man. Now don’t get me wrong…go ahead and enter that bracket into as many contests as you want, however, it is no demonstration of integrity to have more than one bracket.

Case and point: I have earned two entries into the March Madness event we are doing at school. I will not and have no intention of using my second bracket. It simply does not demonstrate integrity to do so.

So who is with me? Who stands for integrity?

Parking Lot #9 | Those Piles of Snow!

So apparently those snow piles are quite prohibitive. There were literally, and always are, dozens of spots available in this parking lot. This guy was so tunnel blinded that he could only find the snow pile. At least his car had a ticket on it.

Parking Lot #8

So…he doesn’t want to drive over that snow so he will just stop 25 feet from being in the spot. Seriously! What goes through the head of someone like this?
