March Madness and the Man Card

So here it is March Madness and everyone is getting ready to fill out their brackets. My friend Paul asked yesterday via Twitter:

Just to be clear: enter as many ncaa bracket contests as you want, but you should only have ONE bracket. Agree?

He ended that post with the hashtag of #integrity. I thought about that for a moment and realized that you should only have one bracket…but what if there was an iPad on the line and you could enter three times? You see, on campus this year the Campus Store is sponsoring a bracket tournament where the winner wins an iPad2. Now there is a legitimate reason to enter multiple brackets since they allow you three entries. I asked Paul if that passed the integrity test to which he replied:

Disagree. #pragmatism, #confidence, #standforsomething, #mancardatrisk

So with my man card at risk I decided to stick with the road of integrity. I will enter many bracket contests this year but I am going to use the same bracket for all of them. So do yourself, your soul, and your man card a favor and stick to one bracket.

    “Disagree. #pragmatism, #confidence, #standforsomething, #mancardatrisk”

    This made me lol.

Nice, but, I would use 3 brackets for an iPad2. #noshame

But when the Man Card is at risk you do what you have to do. I did read recently though you can redeem a man card violation by killing an animal.

man card is serious business NOT TO BE MESSED WITH. I wouldn’t risk it D-train….for the sake of all man cards please enter 1 bracket and save your pop cans if that bracket doesn’t win. some 5,000 mountain dew cans can get you that ipad2

I’m good Nate, thanks…however, I’m probably going to need 10 x 5,000 Coston Pew cans to get that iPad2. 5,000 might get me a random accessory.

didn’t they raise the salaries at NIU? thought y’all were making serious bank :)

I have a feeling that I am not making much more, if anything more, than when your folks were around here. We can survive here though. Obviously we don’t do it for the cash.

trust me I know it’s not for the money!
keep rockin it up there – and maybe yours will be the winning bracket, you know charlie sheen style WINNING…

Winning the iPad2 negates multiple bracket entry for Man Card law. Cool tech > 3 brackets. Also, don’t forget that girls will beat you in bracketology 8/10 times, therefore at least 2 brackets are legal.

Greg, I’m very proud of you and welcome you to the man fold. You know, more than anything else, this decision can be summarized as follows:

If I submit multiple brackets, I am admitting that I don’t have confidence in my picks. If I were firm in my decisions, I would stand by my one bracket. However, I’d rather increase my odds of winning by submitting multiple brackets than trust myself.

On a lesser note, if the person who wins did submit multiple brackets, he or she does not deserve the prize. He or she really didn’t know what to do, so he/she just submitted as many as possible to increase the chance of winning. By his/her actions, he/she views this as nothing more than drawing names out of a hat. At that point, it’s not based on skill, knowledge, or talent anymore.

OK, I’ll stop. As you can tell, I feel strongly about this. It’s definitely a clear-cut matter in my mind!

Thanks for the opportunity to express my insignificant opinion.
